Sustaining the world’s growing population healthily, equitably and sustainably
Population
UN calls for urgent action to feed the world's growing population healthily, equitably and sustainably.
Over 3 billion people cannot afford healthy diets, while malnutrition affects both children and adults. The continuing growth of the human population, expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, together with gradual aging and urbanization will substantially increase the demand for food.
Current food production systems have significant environmental impacts, including 70% of world's freshwater consumption and produces around 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of new agricultural technologies can raise the productivity and incomes of family farmers and help to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
All of these factors contribute to the complexity of the journey towards longevity - the pursuit of a better, healthier and happier life.
